Hidden amongst them are majestic fields of lavender, which offer an unprecedented visual and aromatic spectacle.
Cours Mirabeau is just one of the many places in Provence that are essential to visit if you are passing through the region. It is only 440 meters long but is one of the most popular areas of Aix-en-Provence, as it offers an astonishing amount of cafes, restaurants and postcard-worthy palaces per square meter.
In Cours Mirabeau you can follow in the footsteps of three emblematic cultural figures: the painter Cézanne and the writers Emile Zola and Albert Camus. If you are in Cours Mirabeau be sure to visit the Fountain of the Rotunda, the Ville Comptale, the Old Town and Quartier Mazarin.
If there is something that truly distinguishes Aix-en-Provence, it is its traditional markets. Do not miss this immersive experience of feeling like a local. Every morning, the market is held at Place Richelme, where you will find fresh and traditional products from the region. Here you will find fresh, traditional products from the local area - and the prices are unbeatable!
Don't leave the Provençal flea market without a couple of lavender sachets - they are ideal to add some freshness to your clothes after your flight!
Ville Compatale is the old town of Provence and is a must-see on your tour of Aix-en-Provence. It comprises unique narrow alleys and facades full of charm. You will find old buildings, beautiful squares and bustling cafes and terraces where you can enjoy a traditional Provençal breakfast.
One of the arteries of Aix-en-Provence is the Town Hall square. The building that houses this institution is worth a visit for its impressive facade. Do not miss the grain room and the fountain. The famous Clock Tower is also an ideal destination for memorable photos.
If you're in town on a Sunday, then head to the second-hand book market, where you'll be sure to find some real literary treasures at an affordable price!
Another unforgettable thing to do in Aix-en-Provence is to visit the elegant Place d'Albertas - it's jaw-droppingly beautiful! The square in question has an extensive and fascinating history, as it is said that the wealthy Marquis d'Albertas bought all the buildings in the area, which covered the facade of his house, and built a unique complex. This is what we know today as Place d'Albertas, with its many shops and cafes, and it is surrounded by four small palaces.
Something you cannot miss in Aix-en-Provence is a tour of its most evocative churches. Be sure to start with the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral. This building was built over the ancient Roman temple dedicated to Apollo and where once there were hot springs, the Aquae Sextiae. Sadly, little remains of those times but the beautiful cathedral is worth a visit.
Nor should you miss the church of Saint Jean de Malta. It stands out for its distinctive Gothic style construction and you can find it in the old Quartier Mazarin.
Cézanne is one of the best things to do in Aix-en-Provence. The works of the renowned painter reflect the influence that this city had on him. The vivid colors and light of the city are palpable in some of the painter's paintings - he was truly in love with Aix-en-Provence and it shows in his works! In fact, Cézanne was born in the popular rue de l'Opera.
It is worth visiting the painter's studio, better known as l'Atelier de Cézanne, where the artist worked every morning between 1902 and 1906.
If you are an art lover, Aix-en-Provence is perfect for you. The Caumont Art Center has impressive décor dating back to the 18th century, along with a Versailles-style music room, a tea room and a souvenir store. All exquisitely decorated of course!
